If your state ID or driver's licence already has a star at the upper-right side, you are already REAL ID compliant. There is no need to do anything else.

What is a genuine ID?
Real ID is a security driver's license or state identification card that meets federal standards. If you are approved by the Secretary of state, you will receive your new standard DL/ID in the mail. If you are approved for an REAL ID it will be noted on your ID.

The DMV provides a variety of options for individuals to obtain a real ID. They can be obtained online or over the phone or in-person.
A Real ID is any driver's licence, permit, or non-driver identification card issued by the DMV that is compliant with federal law. In May 2025 it will be required to fly within the United States, and enter certain federal buildings unless you have a valid passport. The cost of the Real ID card in New York depends on your situation. You'll need to pay a fee for the application, a photo, and the card itself. You will pay different fees for applying for a driver's license, renewing an existing license, or changing the New York State ID or license to a Real ID.
In addition to the mandatory documents, you'll also have to show proof of your social security number. If you are applying for an Real ID driver's license or an enhanced ID, the DMV will require verification of your name and date of birth with the Social Security Administration. If the name on your identity proof, lawful status, and Social Security is not the same as the name on your New York State driver's license or ID, you'll be required to submit a court application- or government-issued proof documenting the circumstances that led to the name change.
How long will it normally take to get a Real ID card?
Until recently renewing your license was as easy as getting the letter in the mail that told you it was time to renew. If you plan to fly, or go into certain federal buildings or military bases, you require a REALID or enhanced driver's license. The clock is moving, but it's not enough time to get your Real ID.
The REAL ID Act mandates that states meet certain security standards with regard to their permits, licenses and identification cards. The government claims that the new regulations make it harder for criminals to modify or counterfeit these documents. Federal agencies, including the Transportation Security Administration, will require an actual ID or an enhanced Photo ID to take domestic flights, or enter some federal facilities, including bases for military.

In addition to your current driver's license or state ID card, you'll require birth certificate or another document that is certified by the public with the name and date of your birth and two documents proving your New York residency. Depending on your age you'll also require either the passport or an official immigration document. If you're already a Real ID holder, you aren't required to do anything else when it comes to renewing. Check the DMV's calculator to determine how much a REAL or Enhanced photo ID will cost, and what documents you'll need. There are websites that claim to pre-scan and upload your documents from your home, however these websites aren't affiliated with the DMV. These companies may utilize your documents for fraud purposes, so you should not provide them with images.
