They are more energy efficient than traditional wall ovens and offer a more efficient way to cook. They can also be used to cook both food and warm dishes, reducing the requirement for additional appliances like toasters or warming plates.
When evaluating potential amended energy conservation standards, DOE conducts several analyses, including assessment of technology and market screening analysis, engineering analysis, and a national impact analysis (NIA). For this SNOPR, DOE will rely on its existing engineering analysis of microwave ovens to determine the best efficiency improvements that are technologically feasible for this particular product class.
In the engineering analysis, DOE will compare the design parameters of a microwave to a set of energy performance goals. The engineering analysis will then determine the maximum improvement in energy efficiency that is technologically feasible based on the most advanced microprocessor-controlled model available on the market or in working prototypes, or the maximum reduction in energy consumption that is technically achievable with the current technologies available for this product class.
As part of the NIA, DOE will evaluate the impact on consumers of every product category, including lifecycle cost savings and simple payback period ("PBP"). DOE will utilize the Government Regulatory Impact Model, with an adaptation for microwavable ovens to calculate the industry's net present value (NPV).
The impact on manufacturers will be evaluated as well and DOE will employ a modified version of its Industry Cash Flow model adapted for this product type to calculate the manufacturing NPV. DOE will also look at the impact of these proposals on small businesses and other subgroups of manufacturers to identify those that may be disproportionately affected.
DOE will also look into whether the test procedure for microwave ovens has to be updated in order to include active mode power consumption as well as an integrated energy use measurement. Currently, the test protocols only cover the use of standby mode power.
Design
Microwaves generate heat by causing water molecules to vibrate in food. Wall ovens depend on the circulation of hot air, while microwaves depend on waves to cause food molecules to vibrate. Combination wall ovens combine two distinct appliances into a single unit that can be used to save kitchen space and provides sleek, modern design. But you need to carefully think about your needs and budget before deciding to purchase a combination wall oven. Several of the combination wall ovens we have rated have issues with performance or design.
