Ανατρέπεται η αντίληψη που υπήρχε μέχρι σήμερα ότι τα μαμούθ εξαφανίστηκαν λόγω του συστηματικού κυνηγιού από τον προϊστορικό άνθρωπο
Νέες ενδείξεις δείχνουν ότι δεν ήταν το συστηματικό κυνήγι από τους προϊστορικούς ανθρώπους, αλλά η κλιματική αλλαγή η κύρια αιτία που οδήγησε στην εξαφάνιση των μαμούθ από την ευρωπαϊκή ήπειρο, σύμφωνα με μια νέα γενετική σουηδο-βρετανική επιστημονική έρευνα.Οι ερευνητές, με επικεφαλής τον παλαιογενετιστή δρα Λαβ Ντάλεν του Σουηδικού Μουσείου Φυσικής ιστορίας, που έκαναν τη σχετική δημοσίευση στο περιοδικό βιολογίας "Proceedings of the Royal Society B" της Βασιλικής Εταιρείας Επιστημών της Βρετανίας, σύμφωνα με το BBC, έκαναν αναλύσεις δειγμάτων DNA από 300 τριχωτά μαμούθ.
Η ανάλυση έδειξε ότι ο αριθμός των γιγάντιων ζώων είχε αρχίσει να μειώνεται πολύ νωρίτερα από ό,τι θεωρείτο έως τώρα, γεγονός που αποδυναμώνει την εκδοχή του ανθρώπινου παράγοντα και, αντίθετα, ενισχύει τον κλιματολογικό.
Η κυρίαρχη μέχρι σήμερα αντίληψη είναι ότι τα τριχωτά μαμούθ ήσαν ένα ανθεκτικό και πολυπληθές είδος, όμως η νέα μελέτη μεταβάλλει κάπως αυτή την εικόνα, δείχνοντας ότι τα μαμούθ πέρασαν από «σαράντα κύματα» (εξαφανίσεις κατά τόπους, επεκτάσεις, μεταναστεύσεις κ.α.). Όσο μικρότερη ήταν η γενετική ποικιλομορφία ενός πληθυσμού τους σε μια περιοχή, τόσο μικρότερος ήταν ο πληθυσμός τους.
Η γενετική ανάλυση δείχνει ότι πριν από περίπου 120.000 χρόνια τα μαμούθ σχεδόν κινδύνευσαν να εξαφανιστούν, όταν ανέβηκε η θερμοκρασία του πλανήτη, αλλά ανέκαμψαν, καθώς η Γη εισήλθε σε μια νέα εποχή παγετώνων. Η νέα -και αυτή τη φορά μοιραία- μείωση του πληθυσμού τους, που οδήγησε στην οριστική εξαφάνισή τους, εκτιμάται ότι ξεκίνησε πριν από 20.000 χρόνια στο αποκορύφωμα της εποχής των παγετώνων και όχι πριν από 14.000 χρόνια (όπως πιστευόταν ως τώρα) όταν είχε πια αρχίσει να ανεβαίνει ξανά η θερμοκρασία.
Οι επιστήμονες εικάζουν ότι πριν από 20.000 χρόνια επικρατούσε τόσο κρύο, που ακόμα και το λιγοστό γρασίδι, με το οποίο τρέφονταν τα μαμούθ, είχε πλέον αρχίσει να σπανίζει. Οι περιβαλλοντικές πιέσεις πάνω στο είδος τους εντάθηκε, καθώς η εποχή των παγετώνων σταδιακά εξασθενούσε, πιθανώς επειδή οι χορτολιβαδικές εκτάσεις όπου ζούσαν τα μαμούθ, αντικαταστάθηκαν από δάση στο νότο της ευρώπης και από τούνδρα στο Βορρά.
Ορισμένοι επιστήμονες επιμένουν πως οι άνθρωποι κυνηγοί ήσαν οι βασικοί υπεύθυνοι για την εξαφάνιση των μαμούθ και το βασικό επιχείρημά τους κατά της θεωρίας της κλίματικής αλλαγής είναι ότι η θερμοκρασία είχε ανέβει πολύ πριν αυτά εξαφανιστούν, συνεπώς -λένε- δεν είναι λογικό να υποθέσει κανείς ότι η κύρια αιτία ήταν το περιβάλλον. Όμως η νέα γενετική ανάλυση δείχνει πως τα μαμούθ στην πραγματικότητα εξαφανίστηκαν αρκετά νωρίτερα, γεγονός που ενισχύει την θεωρία περί του κλίματος ως βασικής αιτίας για την εξαφάνιση των ζώων. Ο ανταγωνισμός με τους ανθρώπους και άλλα ζώα θεωρείται ότι έπαιξε ρόλο, αλλά δεν ήταν η πρωταρχική αιτία για την καταστροφή των μαμούθ.
Στη διάρκεια της τελευταίας εποχής των παγετώνων, πριν από 20.000 έως 50.000 χρόνια, έλαβαν χώρα μεγάλες μεταναστεύσεις μαμούθ, καθώς νέα κύματα εγκαταστάθηκαν στην ευρώπη προερχόμενα από την ανατολή. Όμως, στη συνέχεια, ο πληθυσμός τους εισήλθε σε μια φάση σταδιακής και μη αναστρέψιμης μείωσης, ώσπου επήλθε η οριστική εξαφάνισή τους, κάτι που, σύμφωνα με τον καθηγητή 'Αντριαν Λίστερ του Μουσείου Φυσικής ιστορίας του Λονδίνου συνέβη πρώτα στην ηπειρωτική ευρώπη πριν από περίπου 10.000 χρόνια και, στη συνέχεια, στο τελευταίο καταφύγιό τους, μερικά απομακρυσμένα αρκτικά νησιά.
