Ποια ήταν η τελευταία φορά που επισκεφτήκατε την Ελλάδα;Πριν από τρία χρόνια είχα έρθει για πρώτη φορά στην Ελλάδα. Ήρθα στην Αθήνα και ήταν τόσο όμορφα! Το φαγητό, οι άνθρωποι... Έχω βάλει στοίχημα με τον εαυτό μου να έρθω κι άλλη φορά για να εξερευνήσω και άλλα μέρη.
Έχετε ελληνικές ρίζες. Υπάρχει κάτι ελληνικό που αγαπάτε πολύ;
Είμαι υιοθετημένος και ήμουν μεγαλωμένος σαν ελληνόπουλο, πήγαινα από μικρός σε ελληνική εκκλησία και είχαμε ως οικογένεια όλες τις ελληνικές παραδόσεις. Η μητέρα μου ήταν από τη Σκοτία και την Ιρλανδία και ο πατέρας μου ήταν Έλληνας μετανάστης στην Αμερική. Η μαμά μου κι εγώ θέλαμε να μάθουμε να μαγειρεύουμε ελληνικά φαγητά, συναγωνιζόμενοι τις αδελφές του πατέρα μου, οι οποίες ήταν εξαιρετικές μαγείρισσες. Έτσι πηγαίναμε σε ελληνικά φεστιβάλ και αγοράζαμε όλα τα βιβλία με τις παραδοσιακές συνταγές από τις Ελληνίδες γιαγιάδες. Κάναμε διαγωνισμούς για το ποιος από τους δύο μαγείρευε καλύτερα τις ελληνικές νοστιμιές!
Υπάρχει κάποια ελληνική συνταγή που να τη φτιάχνετε μέχρι σήμερα;
Φυσικά. Φτιάχνω σπανακόπιτα και μουσακά κι έχω και μια καταπληκτική συνταγή για μπακλαβά. Είναι πεντανόστιμα, άσε που μου θυμίζουν την προσπάθεια που κάναμε εγώ και η μαμά μου να ευχαριστήσουμε τον μπαμπά μου.
Ποια είναι η άποψή σας για τη ρωσική κυβερνητική τακτική ενάντια στα δικαιώματα της gay κοινότητας;
Ως ανοιχτά ομοφυλόφιλος άντρας, νομίζω ότι όλο το θέμα έχει να κάνει με ανθρώπινα και πολιτικά δικαιώματα. Δηλαδή, όπως γεννήθηκα με καστανά μάτια και σκούρο δέρμα, έτσι γεννήθηκα gay. Γι’ αυτό είναι πολύ σημαντικό να δούμε τι συμβαίνει στη Ρωσία αυτή την εποχή, ειδικά τη στιγμή που σε λιγότερο από έξι μήνες οι χειμερινοί Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες θα λάβουν χώρα εκεί. Το όλο θέμα με έχει πραγματικά αναστατώσει.
Θα παρακολουθήσετε τους Αγώνες;
Δεν είμαι καθόλου σίγουρος ότι θα τους παρακολουθήσω. Αν ήξερα ότι η παρουσία μου εκεί θα βοηθούσε να κινηθούν προς τη σωστή κατεύθυνση τα πράγματα, ναι, θα πήγαινα. Μόνο και μόνο για να υποστηρίξω την LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual & Transgender) κοινότητα και επειδή πιστεύω ότι τα νέα ομοφυλόφιλα παιδιά πρέπει να προστατευτούν. Gay παιδιά γεννιούνται κάθε μέρα στη Ρωσία, οπότε ποιος προστατεύει αυτές τις ψυχές όταν επικρατούν τέτοιες απόψεις στη χώρα όπου μεγαλώνουν; Τα ποσοστά αυτοκτονιών ανάμεσα σε gay εφήβους είναι πολύ υψηλά. Και οι νόμοι που ψηφίστηκαν πρόσφατα στη Ρωσία είναι απ άνθρωποι.
Αν είχατε την ευκαιρία να συναντήσετε τον πρόεδρο Πούτιν, τι θα του λέγατε;
Θα προσπαθούσα να βεβαιωθώ αν κατανοεί ότι είμαστε ανθρώπινα όντα κι εμείς. Το να είσαι gay δεν είναι επιλογή, έχει να κάνει με το ποιος είσαι, πώς γεννήθηκες. Είμαστε όλοι παιδιά του Θεού και όλα τα παιδιά πρέπει να προστατεύονται και να αντιμετωπίζονται με σεβασμό. Φανταστείτε ότι ήταν πολύ δύσκολο και για μένα, καθώς μεγάλωσα σε μια κοινωνία όπου δεν ήταν τόσο «ανοιχτά» τα πράγματα. Στην αρχή δεν πίστευα ότι ήταν κάτι που έπρεπε να μοιραστώ με τα media, αλλά από τη στιγμή που το έκανα ένιωσα πολύ απελευθερωμένος. Είναι πολύ άσχημο να πρέπει να κρύβεσαι.
Υπήρξε έστω κάποια στιγμή που μετανιώσατε που μιλήσατε δημόσια για όλα αυτά;
Όχι, σε καμία περίπτωση, παρόλο που έχω επισκεφτεί και πόλεις όπου, με το πού έφτανα, με «καλωσόριζαν» με πανό που έγραφαν «πέθανε, άρρωστη αδελφή». Έβαζαν φωτογραφίες μου κι έγραφαν στο κούτελό μου ότι είμαι ο διάβολος. Πέρασα πολύ δύσκολα, αλλά έκτοτε συμβιβάστηκα με την ιδέα ότι υπάρχουν πολύ εχθρικά περιβάλλοντα που μπορούμε να αποφεύγουμε.
Σε λίγες μέρες παντρεύεστε με το σύντροφό σας, Johnny Chaillot. Πώς νιώθετε γι’ αυτό;
Για να πω την αλήθεια, δεν περίμενα ποτέ ότι θα ερχόταν αυτή η μέρα. Από μικρός, όταν μίλησα ανοιχτά στη μαμά μου για μένα, αυτό ήταν το μεγαλύτερο άγχος της. Φοβόταν ότι μεγαλώνοντας θα είχα μια μοναχική ζωή. Πάντα ήθελε να έχω κάποιον να με προστατεύει και τώρα, καθώς στην Καλιφόρνια νομιμοποιήθηκαν οι gay γάμοι, έχω βρει κάποιον που είναι ο πραγματικός έρωτας της ζωής μου και η αδελφή ψυχή μου, είμαι πολύ ευγνώμων και είμαι σίγουρος ότι η μαμά μου θα χαμογελάει...
Πιστεύατε ότι θα φτάνατε ποτέ στο να ετοιμάζετε το δικό σας γάμο;
Ποτέ δεν μου είχε περάσει η ιδέα. Πίστευα πως δεν είμαι ο κατάλληλος τύπος ανθρώπου για να παντρευτεί, ίσως γιατί έκανα κακές επιλογές στο παρελθόν σχετικά με τις σχέσεις μου. Προσπαθούσα να ταιριάξω τον τρόπο ζωής μου στη ζωή κάποιου άλλου ανθρώπου, κάνοντας πολλούς συμβιβασμούς και παραμένοντας μέσα σε μια σχέση για τους λάθος λόγους.
Η οροθετικότητά σας ήταν κάτι που εμπόδιζε το να σας αποδεχτεί κάποιος ερωτικά; Υπήρξε φόβος;
Οι τελευταίες μου σχέσεις ήταν με ανθρώπους που δεν είχαν ούτε έχουν τον ιό του HIV. Και φυσικά ήμουν εξαιρετικά προσεκτικός. Αν αγαπάς κάποιον, μπορείς να τον προστατεύσεις. Πάντα μιλούσα για αυτό, δεν ήταν θέμα ταμπού για μένα.
Το επόμενο βήμα μετά το γάμο είναι ένα παιδί;
Δεν κάνω σχέδια για να υιοθετήσω παιδί. Είμαι 53 χρόνων σήμερα και θυμάμαι πώς είναι να μεγαλώνεις σαν παιδί και να έχεις ένα μεγάλο σε ηλικία πατέρα. Πάντα ζήλευα μέσα μου τα παιδιά που είχαν νεότερους μπαμπάδες και μπορούσαν να παίζουν και να αθλούνται μαζί τους. Αυτά είναι πράγματα που εγώ δεν τα έκανα ποτέ με τον μπαμπά μου.
Εσείς, όμως, είστε ακόμη πολύ δραστήριος...
Είμαι ήδη καθηγητής στην εθνική αμερικανική ομάδα καταδύσεων και περνάω πολύ ωραίες στιγμές με τα παιδιά, δουλεύω μαζί τους, τα εκπαιδεύω. Οπότε, το όποιο πατρικό ένστικτο το εκδηλώνω και το ικανοποιώ εκεί. Νομίζω ότι αυτό είναι αρκετό για μένα. Όσο για τον αρραβωνιαστικό μου, τον Johnny, προέρχεται από μια πολύ μεγάλη οικογένεια κι έτσι τον ρώτησα αν θα ήθελε ένα παιδί και μου είπε ότι ήδη έχει πολλές ευθύνες. Οπότε ήταν και κοινή απόφαση να μην αποκτήσουμε παιδί.
Ποια ήταν η δυσκολότερη περίοδος της ζωής σας;
Θα σας έλεγα το 1976, όταν έβγαινα από τους Ολυμπιακούς. Ήταν μια αποτυχία, ήμουν μόλις 16 και δεν καταλάβαινα ακόμη γιατί ενώ πήγαινα να νικήσω, ήρθα δεύτερος και ένιωθα ένα μηδενικό. Βίωνα την τελετή απονομής σαν το μεγαλύτερο δημόσιο εξευτελισμό. Όταν επέστρεψα σπίτι, οι δικοί μου πανηγύριζαν για το ασημένιο μετάλλιο. Κι όμως, έκανα την πρώτη μου απόπειρα αυτοκτονίας μετά από αυτό. Κι αυτό επειδή ένιωσα ότι ο κόσμος θα ήταν καλύτερος χωρίς εμένα κι έτσι άρχισε να μπαίνει η κατάθλιψη στη ζωή μου. Αυτή ήταν η πιο δύσκολη στιγμή που πέρασα. Μαζί με την αποκάλυψη της σεξουαλικής μου ταυτότητας και την οροθετικότητά μου.
Πώς πολεμήσατε την κατάθλιψη;
Ποτέ δεν κατάλαβα την κατάθλιψη. Μετά το πρώτο κρούσμα, αντί να γίνει αυτό για εμένα μια προειδοποίηση, δεν επέτρεψα στον εαυτό μου να «αναγνωρίσω» και να καταλάβω την κατάθλιψη, γιατί υπήρχε η πίεση της προετοιμασίας για τους επόμενους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες. Δυστυχώς, δεν το αντιμετώπισα από την αρχή σωστά.
Ποιος σας βοήθησε περισσότερο σε αυτές τις σκο ΤΕΙνές ημέρες;
Η μητέρα μου ήταν πάντα εκεί για μένα. Σαν παιδί ήμουν δύσκολος, πολύ επαναστάτης και πίστευα πάντα ότι αν δεν με αγαπάνε οι φυσικοί γονείς μου δεν μπορούσε κανείς άλλος να με αγαπήσει. Έτσι, δεν άφηνα κανέναν ουσιαστικά να με φροντίσει. Τους κρατούσα όλους σε απόσταση. Πέρασα κάποιο διάστημα σε αναμορφωτήριο, μετά όμως από την έξοδό μου από εκεί ήρθα πιο κοντά με τη μητέρα μου και δεχτήκαμε ότι μεταξύ μας κανένα θέμα δεν θα έπρεπε να είναι ταμπού. Μπορούσαμε να μιλάμε για ναρκωτικά, για σεξ, για οτιδήποτε. Και μου έδειξε τι σημαίνει να νιώθεις αγάπη χωρίς όρους κατά τη διάρκεια αυτών των σκο ΤΕΙνών στιγμών της ζωής μου.
Το γεγονός ότι υιοθετηθήκατε σε ηλικία μόλις 7 μηνών σας έκανε να νιώσετε ποτέ την ανάγκη να ψάξετε για τους πραγματικούς σας γονείς;
Προσπάθησα να το κάνω στα 18 μου. Ήμουν επαναστάτης χωρίς αίτια σε εκείνη την ηλικία. Πέρασα πολύ δύσκολες στιγμές στην αναζήτησή μου αυτή...
Τι εννοείτε;
Τα παιδικά μου χρόνια σημαδεύτηκαν από οικογενειακά προβλήματα. Ο πατέρας μου είχε προβλήματα αλκοολισμού. Ήταν πολύ αυστηρός. Υπήρχαν πολλές ρήξεις ανάμεσά μας. Η μητέρα μου είχε το ρόλο του ειρηνοποιού. Οι γονείς μου χώρισαν όταν ήμουν σε μικρή ηλικία. Όλα αυτά με έκαναν να απομονωθώ. Και βέβαια αυτό είχε ως συνέπεια να οδηγηθώ στην κατάθλιψη, τον αλκοολισμό, προσπάθησα να κάνω κακό στον εαυτό μου. Είχα μια πολύ δύσκολη σχέση με τον πατέρα μου. Νομίζω ότι ποτέ δεν δέχτηκε το γεγονός ότι ήμουν ομοφυλόφιλος και στη συνέχεια απέκτησα τη νόσο HIV. Προς το τέλος της ζωής του πάλευε με τον καρκίνο. Εκείνη την περίοδο προσπαθήσαμε και οι δύο να έρθουμε ο ένας κοντά στον άλλο, να δούμε ο ένας τον άλλο κατάματα και να «θεραπεύσουμε» τις πληγές του παρελθόντος. Κάναμε πολλές συζητήσεις.
Φοβηθήκατε πως το AIDS θα μπορούσε να σας στοιχίσει τη ζωή;
Ποτέ δεν πίστεψα ότι θα μπορούσα να ξεπεράσω την ηλικία των 30. Ακόμη πολεμούσα την κατάθλιψη και ακόμη ένιωθα πως η αυτοκτονία είναι μια λύση. Την αυτοκτονία στο μυαλό μου δεν την είχα σαν εγωιστικό μέσο, όπως τη θεωρούν πολλοί. Την είχα σαν αδυναμία να διαχειριστώ τον πόνο από την κατάθλιψη. Σκέφτηκα πολλές φορές να βάλω τέλος στη ζωή μου. Στα 16, όπως σας είπα, στα 17 και μετά στα 18. Όπως έλεγα τότε στη μητέρα μου, έβλεπα την αυτοκτονία σαν διέξοδο από τη θλίψη. Είχα τόσο πόνο, που το εναλλακτικό που σκεφτόμουν ότι θα μου πρόσφερε η αυτοκτονία θα ήταν προτιμότερο. Κι αυτός ήταν ο λόγος που δεν έβλεπα να ξεπερνάω τα 30. Όταν διαγνώστηκα με τον ιό HIV, υπήρχαν τόσα άλλα που συνέβαιναν παράλληλα στη ζωή μου: ένας χωρισμός, η απόσυρσή μου από τον ενεργό αθλητισμό και πρωταθλητισμό. Η κατάσταση της υγείας μου σήμερα είναι πολύ σταθερή. Συνεχίζω τη φαρμακευτική αγωγή που ακολουθώ πολύ πιστά τα τελευταία χρόνια. Αθλούμαι, κάνω yoga κάθε μέρα και διαλογισμό, πράγματα που για μένα είναι το ίδιο σημαντικά με το να παίρνω τα φάρμακά μου. Επίσης, κάνω βελονισμό, γιατί βοηθάει το ανοσοποιητικό μου σύστημα.
Τι σχεδιάζετε για το μέλλον;
Το γάμο μου. Ανυπομονώ για τη μεγάλη ημέρα! Ο γάμος θα γίνει στην Καλιφόρνια και τον ετοιμάζουμε εδώ και καιρό. Δεν θα έχει πολλούς καλεσμένους, ίσως να μην ξεπερνούν τους 50. Προσπαθούμε να είναι η ωραιότερη ημέρα της ζωής μας.

Γεννήθηκε στις 29 Ιανουαρίου του 1960. Οι πραγματικοί γονείς του κατάγονταν από τη Σαμόα και τη Σουηδία.
