Είναι απαραίτητος λοιπόν ο έλεγχος του σακχάρου από την Ιη επίσκεψη στον γυναικολόγο, ιδίως στις γυναίκες με αυξημένους παράγοντες κινδύνου. Εάν το σάκχαρο αίματος είναι φυσιολογικό τότε περί την 24η εβδομάδα κύησης θα γίνει η καμπύλη σακχάρου σε όλες τις εγκύους.

Εάν είναι φυσιολογικά τα αποτελέσματα τότε πρέπει να γίνεται έλεγχος σακχάρου νήστεως στους 6 μήνες & στην συνέχεια 1 φορά τον χρόνο, καθότι οι γυναίκες που παρουσίασαν διαβήτη κατά την διάρκεια της κύησης έχουν αυξημένο κίνδυνο να αναπτύξουν διαβήτη τύπου ΙΙ στα επόμενα χρόνια της ζωής τους.
Οι γυναίκες που πάσχουν από Σακχαρώδη Διαβήτη πριν την εγκυμοσύνη ανήκουν στην κατηγορία τύπου ΙΙ, η κύηση των οποίων θεωρείται υψηλού κινδύνου λόγω των επιπλοκών που μπορεί να προκαλέσει στη μητέρα και στο έμβρυο.
